This DVD is the 35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the film. One of the astronomical things about Deliverance is that, even though it is an adventure filmed in the 1970’s, it has managed to not age like a 70’s film. It is both depressing and edge-of-your-seat suspenseful at the same time. The four leads do a enormous job of playing the parts of urban dwellers who want a weekend of adventure in the wilds of Georgia and wind up getting far more than they bargained for. It has noteworthy to say about what it takes to accomplish a man uncivilized and whether or not there is a bit of savagery in all of us, despite how domesticated we may be in predictable situations. Past these observation I won’t rehash the situation elements since fair about everybody on earth knows the details, and if you don’t I won’t spoil it for you. This information comes from a press release by Warner Home Video. I have the 2004 release of this DVD, and quite frankly it looks aesthetic now. I guess the indispensable reason to upgrade would be for all the extra features and the commentary, which are all original with the exception of “The Hazardous World of Deliverance”, which was on the 2004 version of the DVD.

Director John Boorman’s moving, brutal, brooding, explosive and violent masterpiece remains one of Hollywood’s most quick-witted takes on the complex, contradictory cultures of American manhood, otherwise the more familiar hold of directors like Sam Peckinpah and Walter Hill. Based on James Dickey’s fresh, Deliverance roots itself assuredly in racy and engrossing dualities: liberal modernity and backwoods barbarism; beauty and violence; kindness and cuelty; morality and pragmatism and, atmospherically, the existential and the visceral – situating it a definite nick above the average Hollywood action adventure output. Four suburban friends – career-best performances from Reynolds, Voight, Beatty and Cox – rob one last alpha-male shot at canoeing the much Cahulawassee river – objective as it is plot to be flooded – literally and figuratively – by the needs, culture and infastructure of the Modern South as it rolls unforgivingly through what’s left of the countryside.Objective as their occupy middle class tensions, arrogances and irritations open to surface, they bustle – courtesy of the hostile local population – into a world grand smaller(…) . Walter Hill’s differently brlliant Southern Comfort, Jonathan Mostow’s efficient suspenser Breakdown and Curtis Hanson’s The River Wild can be argued to be among Deliverance’s more scrumptious latter-day spawn. (In the latter, Meryl Streep shows that otherwise meek women – pushed to the limit – can be unbiased as primal given a reason and a river!) Deliverance is a salubrious film that harks support to the days when a thoughtful Hollywood film and a crowd-pleasing box office break were – more often than not – one and the same thing.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT’s rocky history is well known. Loved by critics and its fans, it fought to derive an audience, and its final season was a short affair. However, the chase from the shows premier (included uncensored and expanded along with the aired version) to its conclusion (and, YES, it has a conclusion) is hilarious and worth many returns. Here are three seasons of laughs. The series begins with the arrest of the Bluth patriarch and continues as the clan’s only responsible member, Michael (portrayed by Jason Bateman), tries to sustain the family’s business afloat while his mother, siblings, and other family members selfishly grab for every freebie and dollar. His mother, Lucille, is a cool, controlling alcoholic whose loyalty to her family keeps her one step from pure villainy. His siblings include an older brother, Gob, a magician (of runt skill), a younger brother, Buster, a mama’s boy who eventually loses a body fragment to a unfriendly seal, and a sister whose marriage is … complicated. Throw in a long-suffering son infatuated with his cousin and an uncle who is the twin of his father, and you can recognize how complicated Michael’s life becomes.

Not your average family, not your average TV comedy (this is NOT a sitcom performed live in front of a studio audience but is filmed more like a documentary with the camera floating around like an unseen voyeur — contemplate the broken-down comedy series SOAP updated a la THE OFFICE) . The jokes arrive rapidly and mad. It’s all absurd and incredibly spellbinding.

For the narrate, the series is presented widescreen, and there are deleted scenes and audio commentaries for selected episodes. To squawk you the truth, I haven’t even skimmed these extras, but I have watched the series in its entirety far too many times to boom without embarrassing myself. It’s too poor that ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT didn’t execute the ratings considerable to sustain it afloat, but it has more laughs than comedies that lasted twice as long.

I arrived gradual to this dance. I don’t really have any structure to my TV viewing, other than Sunday nights on HBO. Despite reading clear reviews and hearing accolades for this reveal I missed the entire broadcast season. What that means to me is that I’ve fair immersed myself in probably the funniest 22 episodes of broadcast comedy ever (that includes Seinfeld and the aged Dick Van Dyke indicate) . This first season is chock beefy of running gags, absurd situations and some of the funniest deadpan dialog deliveries ever recorded on video. It’s impossible to single out a cast member because they all effect notable contributions, even the guys who slither on for a line or two. Watching them in sequence does possess some continuity of chronicle but you’ll catch yourself returning to some special favorites. The bring your daughter to work episode brings out the absurdity of the whole practice while delivering some of the best laughs of the whole series. Engage THIS!!!

For those current to this British masterpiece, Midsomer Murders is a long running “who done it”, based on the novels of Caroline Graham, starring John Nettles (of the Bergerac fame) as the unflappable Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby. The series is position in the fictional Misomer County, which comprises of many cosy, rural villages, where wealthy and abominable alike seem to do each other in at an average rate of three to four bodies per episode. The series has a worldwide following, not in the least due to the creative and macabre ways in which the MM victims are typically dispatched. I give the series as a whole a five star rating, though location 12 was a bit dissapointing (four stars) in that it lacked some of its trademark British humour which in the past acted as a buffer between the viewer and the grim reality of the bloody murders… Let’s hope Station 13 sees MM attend to its best develop!

SPOILER ALERT!!!: In The Axeman Cometh we meet Simon, Cully’s intended. Her wedding is in ep 60 (which I guess will be in station 15) . Slay OF SPOILER ALERT!!!

If you gain any MM sets from Site 2, you may already occupy at least some of the above episodes, as the Residence 1 and 2 sets are NOT synchronised. Better check… I read somewhere there were fewer MM episodes released in the US in order to preserve the tag of each status more affordable. If that was indeed the case, then it is a mountainous shame… I would like to gaze those missing episodes released at some point in the US as well.

PS: As a side notice, John Nettles is retiring soon, though we should watch Barnaby episodes well into 2011. The makers are unexcited shopping for a capable lead who will occupy up the baton. All they will confirm is that Barnaby will NOT be killed off, and that his recent sidekick (played by Jason Hugh) is NOT in the running. The actress playing Cully has already retired from MM (her last episode was shown on British TV this summer; it was her character’s wedding episode) .

This is more a message to the fans of Midsomer Murders in The USA who catch tired of having to wait almost two years after the demonstrate is broadcast to search for it on DVD.

First the titanic review…..These episodes are as amazing as all the previous shows. The ability of the writers to support up the quality is nothing short of astounding. What a track relate. Whoa!

Now the slow message…these episodes were released on dvd in the UK in September 2008. The entire TEN EPISODES of that season were released as “The Sixth Collection” You can catch it from Amazon UK for about $70 including shipping. This USA release has only four of those episodes issued one year later at about $36.

The one secure here is the UK releases are on the location 2 PAL format which will not play on a lot of the USA place 1 dvd players. BUT you can lift a dvd player that will play the situation 2 PAL format good here on Amazon. I did.

Series Designate….John Nettles will be retiring at the waste of 2010 with one final series of eight episodes.With the blueprint Acorn chops up these programs into cramped three and four episode packages for the USA it will be 2012 before we accept to spy any of them.

I Like this DVD! I’ve looked at books, online instruction, and even had a family member try to tell me. None of those methods worked for me. The diagram Nici goes about teaching is like having a friend advance over to give instructions. She is very definite and goes slowly. The DVD pauses in places so you can go ahead and then press play when you are ready. She teaches two methods, English and Continental. We chose Continental. I found out why my family member could not voice me…….she does English, and I’m all thumbs that plan. So having both shown gives you the ability to consume which works best for you. The only thing for a beginner that I found difficult was casting on. The DVD shows 3 ways of creep knotting to commence, but does not display where the tail should go….front or succor? My mom came over to point to us – after casting on the tail goes in the front. This is where you will be using the story from the cast on your first 10 loops…..when you turn the needle around as you switch hands, your tail will be in the attend where it needs to be. I know that sounds simple, but for a beginner it was a conundrum!! If the tail is in the front, you hasten out of epic! Other than that microscopic detail….every detail for knitting and purling is covered well!! There are halt up angles and it is exhibit “over the shoulder” so you are not watching her knit and then try to reverse it. If you want to learn to knit……catch this DVD…within a short while you’ll be knitting away!

I have been knitting for a miniature over six months and I know the basics (knit, purl, casting on, etc) but this DVD has detached been an tremendous assist to me. I now know how to apply emergency first befriend to a swatch, how to block, increasing and other small things that you need on your chase to becoming a knitter. Also as a bonus, some of the knitting terms, SSK and K2tog are explained.

You can’t go rotten with this DVD. She shows you English and Continental styles and the best part–she encourages you and tells you it’s okay to bear your needle a positive diagram or knit loosely.

One of the funniest films ever made that serene manages to beget up an animated dwelling. A total winner.

It features some of the most genuinely dumb and comic tough guys in the history of cinema, and a sharp uninteresting burn by Deniro, a shortchanged ex-cop, who fair wants a collected miniature coffee shop as payment for his decency and integrity. The funny chemistry between Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin is top-drawer. Surrounded on all side by ethical infants, these two characters at least know the contrast between virtue and vice, and are ironically the lawful backbone of the film.

Comedies that don’t wallow in their humor are twice as noteworthy fun, and Midnight Hasten maintains a swift traipse throughout. Situation-wise, it’s a dynamo of action. I found the denouement to be quite interesting as well, at the very least it provokes belief.

If you’re looking for a comedy with depth, bite, wit and excitement, then win Midnight Urge. The DVD’s spiffy special features quite simply reinforce my recommendation of purchasing this one, not honest renting.

This film pairs Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin in a Buddy/ Road film/ Action fable combination that results in one of the best pairnings ever in this type of movie. Both actors are in top get and play off of each other beautifully. The supporting cast is also agreeable particularly Dennis Farina who delivers a splendid performance as a sleazy mob boss who has an endless supply of creative threats to utilize to motivate his subordinates. Yaphett Koto is also very respectable as frustrated FBI Inspector Alonzo Mosley. It is the combination of DeNiro and Grodin that really drives the flim and provides both it’s best comedy and it’s more dramatic moments. One of the best movies of this type I’ve ever seen. Highly recommended. There are so many memorable lines that the movie holds up to repeated viewings.

I can’t possess the number of negative reviews this movie has gotten! I bet these people don’t like James Bond movies, either.

To fully be pleased Heavy Metal, one has to understand the era it came out in. At the time, most animation, at least what was seen in the US, was frequently of the “family entertainment” variety seen in Saturday morning cartoons and TV commercials. Apart from Ralph Bakshi, most animators were basically shackled by the need to reveal something that was “rated G”. Heavy Metal took the sincere opposite route. It was a liberating experience for the animators working on the film to be allowed to method things they usually weren’t allowed. And they got paid to do it, too!

After the opening Soft Landing sequence, we’re introduced to the Loc-Nar, a splendid green orb responsible for all the putrid that has plagued the universe (or at least, that which has plagued the human urge) . The various stories contained in the film are told by the Loc-Nar to a young girl, as examples of it’s awesome power.

The stories include the film noir homage Harry Canyon, the male “wish fulfillment fantasy” of Den (which demonstrates the versatility of the gradual John Candy, who voices both Dan, the science nerd who gets transported into an alternate dimension by the Loc-Nar, as well as Den, the Conan/He-Man-esque beefcake that he is magically transformed into), the highly droll Captain Sternn (trivia: the deny of the prosecutor is done by John Vernon, the actor who portrayed Dean Wormer in Animal House), the EC-esque B-17 (aka Gremlins, which went through so many script revisions, it’s a miracle it got finished at all), the bizarrely hilarious So Shapely And So Uncertain (ok, maybe there’s some truth to the juvenilia charges during this segment, but only a corpse could sustain from laughing at this part), and revenge scenario of Taarna (imagine a tougher, sexier version of Xena, only about a decade and a half earlier) .

While there IS some element of juvenilia here, it’s no worse than any other movie that’s been released by any major studio during the last 25 years. In fact, I bet it’s a runt more cerebral than most of those other movies. Harry Canyon is a rather crafted film noir homage, while some elements of Taarna are clearly patterned on Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns. And while there are a couple sex scenes and a determined amount of excessive violince in Heavy Metal, again, it’s nothing compared to some of the garbage that’s shown on cable TV these days. I’d certainly rather ogle this than Basic Instinct or No Contrivance Out.

This movie is a classic fragment of animation. Yeah, some of it’s rough around the edges, but that has a lot to do with Columbia’s decision to travel up the deadline so they could have the novel movie out in time for the summer 81 season. One has to assume the scope of the undertaking, and the relatively short time that was at hand to develop it.

Look at the “travelling sequence” during Taarna, where she’s shown riding her mount (a sort of substantial bird creature) over a rolling landscape, and think that it was done WITHOUT the utilize of any kind of computer generated work. It’s explained in the audio commentary on the rough carve of the film, as well as during the documentary how it was done, and why it didn’t quite turn out as planned) . No one had ever done anything like that, and it had to all be done by hand.

Really, you can’t occupy this movie too seriously. It’s a movie that exists soley to entertain. There’s no colossal message or point to the movie. Objective keep the DVD in the player, turn out the lights, turn up the volume LOUD, and unprejudiced relish the stir.

It should be well-known, that this disc also contains some of the best bonus features I’ve seen on any DVD. Besides the regular movie, you earn a chunky length “rough crop” of the film, consisting of storyboards, pencil tests, and some completed animation. The only audio for this rough slit (besides the optional audio commentary, by Carl Macek, who also does a completely different commentary for the finished movie) is the dialog. There’s long stretches of silence, but it’s worth watching, as there’s lots of bits of dialog that were lop from the final movie (we learn, for instance, that Katharine, like Den, was also transformed when she was transported to this mysterious alternate universe) . It’s also curious to price that the stories weren’t always in the order that they were in the final movie.

There’s also a half hour documentary with interviews from many of the filmmakers interested in making the film. We finally net out why we gaze a model of a house blowing up at the demolish (because they didn’t have time to conclude the animation for that one bit), and also why Cornelius Cole’s Neverwhere Land was cleave from the movie (either for reasons of length/continuity, or because Cole didn’t achieve it in time, depending on exactly which version of the record you wish to own.

You also win a few minutes of deleted scenes, most notably the above mentioned Neverwhere Land, which was originally supposed to link Captain Sternn and B-17. There’s also a few minutes that surround an early version of the framing chronicle (in whence the Loc-Nar was actually the power source of a magical merry-go-round, and the various objects on the merry-go-round related in one plot to the stories…ie, there’s a taxicab, Taarna’s mount, etc…each time the girl takes a flow in a different vehicle on the merry-go-round, she experiences a different epic) .

And finally, you secure all Heavy Metal covers up through 1999, plus various bits of production drawings, cels, etc.

In short, this is a classic film that should be viewed by all fans of animation and/or heavy flicks. Prudes and conservatives who obtain cranky at the very view of a movie being ruined by a shrimp too powerful flesh or blood (and really, there isn’t THAT mighty of either in this film) or a minute warped humor (ok, there’s PLENTY of that here) are advised to preserve away. I fair wish they had restored Neverwhere Land to it’s fresh set between Captain Sternn and B-17.

Some critics and film historians have labeled 1981’s HEAVY METAL as the last film to genuinely consider the mishmash sensibilities of the post-hippy 1970s counter-culture, and stylistically and thematically this appears to be good. Based on the adult counter-culture cult funny of the same name, HEAVY METAL definitely is a sort of spacey concatenation of disparate visual aesthetics and heterogeneous science-fiction/fantasy narratives. But despite being a hodgepodge as a whole, the film serene manages to offer a very bewitching draw to end 90 minutes.

As with the magazine, the film is basically aimed at horny male adolescents, offering plenty of nude, amply bosomed women running around in the midst of stylized violence and gore; lots of rock music (though these ditties from favorite metal bands of the tedious ’70s may not appeal to the new generation of horny male adolescents) ; and references to the drug-oriented sub-culture (definitely not a cartoon for the pre-teen crowd) . Each individual segment of HEAVY METAL was scripted and directed independently of the others, which likely accounts for the varying fine and yarn styles. But many of these contributors were (and are now) some of the most talented people in the film industry, including writers Dan O’Bannon, Len Blum, and Daniel Goldberg, and directors John Bruno, John Halas, and Jimmy T. Murikami. (Gerald Potterton, listed in the credits as the film’s director, was in reality the overseer for the project as a whole.)

Because the film does not enjoy a single cohesive plotline, it is best to evaluate each arresting segment in its occupy lawful. Some of those individual stories are quite thought-provoking or humorous–or both–and even some of the more mediocre segments level-headed offer some astounding visuals. One of the most intellectually entertaining is a anecdote called DEN, in which a young bespectacled geek is transported into a parallel universe and transformed into a shapely, muscled barbarian hero. After falling in cherish with a curvaceous maiden, he helps her attach her people from their draconian Caligula-like dictator. B-17 is probably the most earnest segment, though there seems to be no intrinsic logic to the sparse epic. In it, the slow crewmembers of a WWII bomber plane are inexplicably resurrected as flesh-eating zombies, subsequently seeking to design a meal of the plane’s still-living pilot. Visually, however, this segment is quite blooming, evoking the deliciously frightful artistic style of the venerable E.C. comics of the ’50s and early ’60s. And in the funniest segment–entitled SO Fair, SO DANGEROUS–a fair Pentagon secretary is inadvertently sucked into an alien spaceship that resembles a gargantuan smiley face. After confronting the spaced-out druggie crewmembers, she ultimately becomes the lover of the ship’s robot and decides to remain aboard.

After its initial release, HEAVY METAL attained a cult following of sorts and became a popular of the midnight-movie crowd. Unfortunately, its release to the home-video market was delayed for years due to disputes over copyrights for some of the rock songs worn in the soundtrack. Because of this, poorly produced bootlegged copies of the flick were illegally sold (usually at Sci-fi cons) and swapped among fans, and the inappropriate video quality contributed to the film’s unfair reputation for being a mediocre film. But the music disputes were eventually resolved somehow, and the film became commercially available to the home market in the mid 1990s and regained its popularity as a wintry cartoon. (Some statistics display that it is the most favorite film in the Columbia/Tristar home-video catalog.)

Columbia/Tristar’s Special-Edition DVD of HEAVY METAL offers a stunning digital transfer of the film and soundtrack, along with some really frosty bounus material. For animation fans, one of the best of the bonus features is a enchanting feature-length pencil-test version of the film (with optional commentary) . Columbia/Tristar also offers a version of the HEAVY METAL in their SuperBit collection, but as with their other SuperBit films, the disc region required for the higher bit rate precludes the inclusion of any bonus material. Unless the buyer has a high-definition TV and can like the increased narrate quality of the SuperBit disc, the Special-Edition version is the plan to go. Either blueprint, HEAVY METAL offers enough entertainment value to accomplish it a advantageous addition to the DVD collection of any SF or animation fan.

Another Mario Bava masterpiece – THE WHIP AND THE BODY – has royally entered the DVD market thanks to an admirable treatment from VCI. If you are not aware that, under the pseudonym of John M. Faded, is hiding Mario Bava and that 90% of the initial credits are also english pseudonyms of well (or less -) known italian actors or technicians, you could mistake THE WHIP AND THE BODY for a Hammer production. At least during the first 10 minutes.

Then, you would have certainly recognized the maestro touch ; who else could have filmed in 1963 a sadistic Christopher – Kurt – Lee whipping the elegant Daliah – Nevenka – Lavi who asks for more after each strike. I doubt Terence Fisher would have dared to shoot such scenes. Assume also of the delirious travelling of Tony Kendall whose face has a different colour each time he appears in the light of the corridor. Thank you once more VCI to let us devour all the subtleties of Mario Bava’s work on light.

Once again, the surprisingly rational Bava leaves room for a psychologic explanation at the raze of THE WHIP AND THE BODY. Until his last movie – SHOCK -, the italian director will remind us that Cinema is a great liar and that reality is so simple to clarify. This theme will be treated masterfully by Bavain in his last genial movie RABID DOGS.

While watching this `uncut’ European version of La Frusta e il corpo (1963) aka The Whip and the Body (1965), I had a hard time belief unprejudiced what the heck was so controversial about it at the time of its release that it should have been hacked to pieces the plot it was by various editors (I contemplate the U.S. version ruin up being the most mutililated) …I guess it is objective difficult for me to fathom the seemingly excessive stringent nature of film censorship in location some thirty plus years ago, when the film was originally released…by today’s standards, the `shocking’ material is fairly composed…but then I collect a lot of things I deem tame in the cinematic sense tend to have a stronger accomplish on less avid movie fans. Directed by Mario Bava (Unlit Sabbath, Planet of the Vampires), the film stars Christopher Lee (Circus of Terror, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave), Daliah Lavi (Lord Jim, The Silencers), and Tony Kendall (Kiss Kiss, Demolish Ruin) . Also appearing is Gustavo De Nardo (Baron Blood), Harriet Medin (Schlock, Death Bustle 2000), Ida Galli (The Leopard), and Luciano Pigozzi (Yor, the Hunter from the Future) …unprejudiced a tag, if you’ve seen this film and don’t seek many of the names of the writers, crew or the supporting cast, that’s because it wasn’t recent for producers to require the usage of `American’ nom de plumes as it was deemed easier to schlep a film to the U.S. if it had familiar sounding names rather than `crazy’ names with more vowels than consonants…and example of this is the listed director John M. Worn, which is actually a pseudonym ragged by Mario Bava. Was this a product of American arrogance? Or a ruse worn by European producers to more easily introduce their films into the lucrative American market?

The film begins with an older woman eyeing a glass case containing a dagger and roses (some people objective earn Hummel figurines), and then we examine a lone figure on horseback arriving at a castle perched on cliff above a beach. The rider, known as Kurt Menliff (Lee), has arrived home, but not necessarily to the warmest of welcomes. Turns out Kurt was the cause of some `unpleasantness’ absorbing the housekeeper’s daughter and her subsequent suicide by spend of the dagger we saw earlier (hence why the mother keeps it under glass, I thunder) …anyway, Kurt claims his return was prompted by his desire to wish his brother Christian (Kendall) and his novel wife Nevenka (Lavi) well, but the exact reason is because he wants to lay claim to what he believes is rightfully his (the land, the castle, etc.) as Kurt and Christian’s father, Count Menliff (De Nardo) isn’t in the best of health. By the intention, did I mention that Kurt and his unique sister-in-law Nevenka were somewhat of an item in the past? Oh, Nevenka claims she hates Kurt now, but we all know suitable esteem never dies, especially between smart freaks (of which both Kurt and Nevenka are, given their limited S&M adventure on the beach) . Soon after this there is a violent death (whose, you ask? I won’t say) and thus begins the genuine plod present as them vengeful bones gape comeuppance from the living…

If you’re looking for buckets of blood and gallons of monstrous gore, you best turn around and preserve on keeping on as, while this is an Italian terror film, its not really of the normally visceral kind churned out by the likes of Lucio Fulci (City of the Living Boring), Dario Argento (Suspiria), Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust), or even Bava (A Bay of Blood) himself…there is some violence, and even some blood, but what I reflect most haunted people at the time was the scene featuring the reaction of Nevenka as she was being flogged (she appeared to be having the expansive O, if you come by my drift) …the movie may seem humdrum, even tiresome, to some, but I belief of it more as deliberate, as Bava broken-down the element of anxiety as sort of a backdrop to focus on the irregular relationship between Kurt and Nevenka, one I had a hard time view not because it wasn’t clearly developed, but only because my acquire, personal preferences in terms of romantic relationships don’t include such overt acts of dominance. A number of aspects stand out in this satisfactory production, the three most prominent being the performances, the direction, and the thoughtful development of the main characters. Lee does especially well (despite slight hide time) coming across more as an luminous, seductive, malevolent force of sinister rather than outrageous character with a penchant for flogging. Lavi is also first-rate as a woman tormented by the denial of her inner desires, exacerbated by the return of her ex-lover. The direction is such that it creates a glum, brooding, gothic atmosphere soaked with tension (some scenes were dragged out a minute long for my tastes) that will withhold the attention patient viewers as the mystery unfolds, and the seemingly supernatural elements kick in…Bava does especially well presenting sometimes subtle, sometimes not so subtle, metaphorical life/death imagery that compliments the account, adding to the overall production. Two other key elements is the incompatibility of vibrant (objective short of gaudy) colors compared with the deep, sunless, spooky shadows, along with the lush and sweeping musical gather. There are a couple of weaknesses, in my notion, one being the unnecessary dubbing of Lee’s mumble…why this was done I don’t understand. The person they got to do the dub does sound similar to Lee, but he couldn’t reproduce the commanding, authorative, and aristocratic tone normally explain in Lee’s sigh. The other weakness was in the dialog itself…sometimes it was advance perfect, and then sometimes it came off awkward, but perhaps this was due to the Italian actors having to protest their lines in English…regardless, neither of these would be cause for me not to recommend this film to someone keen in one of the better (if not best) examples of European panic I’ve seen yet…

VCI Home Entertainment presents a very good-looking, wide hide (1.85:1), uncut European version of this film. There are signs of wear due to age (some lines, white specks in the murky scenes), but overall the recount comes across very determined. The audio, presented in Dolby Digital mono, comes through well. Special features include musical tracks by composer Carlo Rustichelli aka Jim Murphy, an unique theatrical trailer, biographies, a photo gallery, and trailers for a couple of other Bava films including Planet of the Vampires (1965) and Blood & Sad Lace (1964) . Also included is a commentary track by Tim Lucas, and editor for Video Watchdog. If you gather a chance, I would highly recommend listening to this commentary as Lucas is like a human computer when it comes to details and information about this, and other films in the genre. And it’s not that he unbiased spews forth facts, but he really seems to have a passionate, comprehensive, knowledgeable opinion of the material that may provide a perspective on this film one may not glean from viewing the movie itself…four stars for the movie, and one extra for the commentary.

By the plan, if I were one of the characters in this fable, I probably would have chucked that dagger (you know, the one that kept turning up and killing people? ) in the ocean…I would have also secured some chains around the gates of that crypt, as it seemed a current position for many to visit…

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), weak Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me bellow.

I opinion it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a frightened young boy star-struck by a noted explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become fleet friends, and thunder to one day go to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they lift their dream home and fix it up, hoping to beget it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through former age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a glad marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s damage when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers conclude in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and go to Paradise Falls. A weak balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of brilliant balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a elephantine, gallant kid trying to pick up a scouting badge.

After landing in Paradise Falls, the extinct man and the minute boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a enormous rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of conclude calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his shaded mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by fair hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole unique world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, tubby of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Obtain another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to produce an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster intelligent movie. But in the meantime, they’re unexcited putting out savory lively movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety ragged man. It’s a charming, fun shrimp adventure chronicle with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet miniature tale about loss and adore.

As a child, the scared Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared admire of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, fade into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a sincere estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an fervent, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the straggle. Terrible kid was honest trying to accumulate an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle hump to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a sizable emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious ragged man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the frail guy is very familiar to Carl — and to recall Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as favorite as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty veteran coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can be pleased Carl’s care for for his lost wife, and his unimaginative realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they note all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing archaic together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy reach to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of big dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Observe Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Chilly! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an broken-down airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and definite to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is definite to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special recognize. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I cherish you”) and act the plot dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to secure shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of strange stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable keen shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to mutter potentially ghastly baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously sharp, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can appreciate. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

James Toback’s portrait of white and black culture mixing it up on the streets of Manhattan is like two films colliding. In the center of the swirl are a group of upper-class white teens (led by Elijah Wood and pop singer Bijou Phillips) who appropriate hip-hop culture to rebel against their afflunt lifestyle, and a posse of gangstas and drug dealers (led by rap producer Oli “Power” Grant) who are themselves trying to get off the streets and into the business culture through their music. Aging indie filmmaker Toback has long shown an interest in character contradictions and quirks. Here the dynamic works: The two groups are genuinely curious about one another and mix with a cautious but untroubled ease. Less successful is the contrived drama that orbits this cultural mix but never quite meshes–such as Ben Stiller as a self-loathing New York cop who blackmails college basketball star Allan Houston into betraying his boyhood buddy turned street criminal.

Toback spices his Altmanesqu style of restless camera work and impressionistic intercutting with attitude, nervous energy, and in-your-face sex. There’s an interesting story to be told here, but the provocative cultural mix gets lost in the self-conscious melodrama and only periodically roars to life, notably in the edgy, unpredictable scenes with Mike Tyson (an inspired bit of casting that works marvelously). Also featured are rapper Raekwon, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, Brooke Shields, and Robert Downey Jr. –Sean Axmaker

I am guessing it isnt out till after Xmas because in America the final of the first thirteen episodes that feature on this disc wont be aired till impartial before Christmas. Makes sense. Gigantic that all 13 episodes will be on the disc as in Australia only 9 episodes will be aired before our slay of the year ratings where everything goes off till mid Feb. It’s a stout series, would almost be worth to have a “Thats Glee-tainment” disc unprejudiced featuring all the music numbers. My personal favourite for staging and carry out – so far “Support Holding On”.

Utterly lustrous, insightful, poignant and astonishing! Although it hasn’t been the tubby season yet, the first 13 episodes and the outpouring of help on I-Tunes with the show’s songs have proven that “Glee” is a force to be reckoned with. Created by Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck), the present follows the William McKinney HS club led by Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) who finds something special and incredible in each of the Glee members. Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is head of the school’s cheerleading team and share co-sponsor who hilariously never ceases to way to lift out the Glee club. Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), the “doe-eyed spruce freak”, is the school’s counselor who finds herself becoming closer to the club than expected. Jessalyn Gilsig (who portrays Will’s wife, Terri), is supportive of her husband’s decision to assume over Glee but becomes selfish in her hopes to inaugurate a family. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) displays her abilities as a diva and proves that she is confident in her talents and goals. Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) reluctantly joins the club and ends up having to form a decision between Glee and football. Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) is proud of having an independent spirit and her vocals are out of this world. Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) struggles to admit his sexual orientation but his passion for the music is spirited after he joins the football team and teaches them a thing or two about dancing. Noah Puckerman (Brand Salling) is Finn’s best friend who at first, dislikes the club for it’s flamboyancy, but has a change of heart for a very different reason. Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) is the all-American cheerleader who is head of the celibacy club and joins Glee to serve Sue in taking the club down. Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) is another fellow Glee-ster who wears Gothic clothes regularly and has a speech impediment who becomes a wonderful adversary for Rachel. Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) is a handicapped student who reaches out to the club in proving that his disability hasn’t little him in being an outstanding guitar player and singer. There were so many moments that were so touching, comic and all-around joyous that it’s hard to completely mention. From laugh-out-loud musical numbers of Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It” to the momentous hit of Journey’s “Don’t Close Believin’”, the tie-in soundtrack is a MUST for any die-hard fan of the present! The ultimate breakout atomize of the ‘09-’10 TV season, “Glee” is THE reveal you don’t want to miss.
